things

well s i believe you are right. it is time for some structure and i strongly feel that interaction and communication is the key. although i love the randonymity we have achieved thus far, it does make it hard to then seperate it from just any other blog (which in my opinion we should not be aiming for).

obviously if there has been a theme as such it has been the square and the cross, and i think lewis was right to tie that to religion as well. also it makes me think of knowledge (i.e. waht we actually know, if anything etc...) and maths, proof etc... but being honest my responses to that untill now have been mostly on a visual level. however the discussion that we had today about boyce (sp?) and the bandaging of weapons was what inspired my 'seasons greetings' piece because i feel that religion can also be used a weapon. im glad people had quite alot to say about that piece because that has already given me more to think about.

the other possible theme for me has been the virtual aspect. i.e. the fact that this 'site' is made to be viewed on screen and that people have played with that idea using photography and video of screens etc
well those are just my thoughts one where we were, are and want to be. we should meet in the real world soon.

Looking for coherence.

Gentlemen,
It is my considered opinion that we require a concious effort to apply a more rigourous structure or at least some continuity of interaction and response concerning our creative endeavours here at The Square & the Cross.

We have so far I would argue, as individuals, responded to the site very much in the nature of what would normally be expected of a blog published on the internet. In a fairly random fashion we've been posting images and texts that relate to our seperate artistic practices. This in itself is fine as it has to some degree introduced us to eachother and allowed for some intuitive journeys to begin. We should continue to do this as it allows for feedback and supportive interactions which are vital to the learning process and for me anyway are an essential ingredient of the artistic imperative.

But these dialogues must lead us somewhere. In this particular exercise I want us to use the tools we have available to create a piece that stands on it's own two feet. What is the Square & the Cross? What is it for, what can it do and what can we do with it? What are the implications for using the internet to make and disseminate art? Just having a website dosn't inherantly mean that one becomes more visible. We gotta tell people about it, spread the word. We need to find ways of bringing an audience to our work. Linking to other websites (and having them link to us) Using email and word of mouth and putting up posters and flyers will go someway towards this.

OK, so what do we want people to find when they get here? Just a bunch of art students posting a journal (albeit a fractured one) or something they can interact with. It must be fun and/or thought provoking. In part using links to other websites to create an art resourse is a useful and interesting aspect, making tsatc into a hub and perhaps the idea that logging onto a particular site and following links is a creative journey, one of discovery and surprise. We all know what it's like to get lost in cyberspace!

One approach we could take is to post images and other works and challenge eachother to create new work in response (essentially a game of Chinese Whispers) Following threads such as this could lead to some new places.

Well, I'm gonna think about these things some more over the next coupla days and it may be that given time constraints we won't really achieve our aims (whatever they turn out to be) So expect more posts and post more posts and we'll just see what happens.

Tarra fer now.
